Coastal Orthopaedics a private practice, situated at Shelly Beach Hospital in Shelly Beach. Dr Chivers, Dr Coetzee and Dr Singh focus on total hip joint replacements, knee joint replacements, knee arthroscopies, Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) reconstructions, meniscus tears, shoulder surgery and orthopaedic trauma surgery.

Dr David Chivers

​Dr Chivers completed his undergraduate MBChB degree at Wits University, and later went on to finish his internship and community service at Port Shepstone Provincial Hospital.

 

He finished his MMED in orthopaedic surgery and qualified at the College of Orthopaedic Surgeons of South Africa (FC Orth (SA)) at the University of Cape Town and Red Cross Children’s Hospital. He furthered his studies with a fellowship in hip and knee arthroplasty (replacements) under the guidance of renowned Cape Hip and Knee surgeons: Dr G Grobler and Dr B Dower. 

 

Dr Chivers performs over 150 hip and knee replacements per year in both Public and Private Hospitals. It has been well reported in the Orthopaedic literature that high volume surgeons generally have fewer revision procedures than low volume surgeons when using tried and tested implants. Dr Chivers is an honoury lecturer at the University of Natal and keeps updated by attending annual local and international conferences.

Dr Freek Coetzee

Dr F Coetzee is an orthopaedic surgeon with 25 years’ experience.

 

He is currently the Head of Department at Port Shepstone regional hospital and honorary lecturer with UKZN. He performs over 150 joint replacements per year in private practice as well as at the Port Shepstone arthroplasty unit.

Dr Coetzee areas of interest are hip and knee surgery and sports injuries. He accomplished arthroscopic knee surgeon. He regularly attends international conferences and is up-to-date with the latest techniques and procedures.

Dr Virsen Singh

Dr Singh completed his undergraduate Medical Degree at the University of Cape Town. He then completed his internship and community service at Addington and St Andews hospitals respectively.

 

Dr Singh went on to do his registrar training at Wits University.  Once qualified he worked as specialist consultant at Baragwanath Hospital. 

 

In 2019, Dr Singh embarked upon a year-long subspecialist fellowship in arthroplasty at Baragwanath Hospital.  During his fellowship, he gained exposure to both primary and revision hip and knee joint replacement procedures.  During the same year, Dr Singh did more than 20 local and international visits in order to refine his skills through interaction with leaders the field.  He presented original work on podiums locally and internationally and also published in the South African Orthopaedic Journal.  Dr Singh was involved in over 200 joint replacement surgeries during his fellowship.  Besides hip and knee surgery Dr Singh also has a special interest in paediatric orthopaedic conditions and trauma related injuries.

Melinda Cranzi

Melinda is the brains behind our accounts and medical aid administration. She is the person to contact with any hospital related or authorisation queries. Melinda always tries her utmost to help our patients deal with medical aid admin issues, she is dedicated to our patients and is a true asset to our practice.

Sarita Grobler

Sarita is our receptionist. She is the friendly voice on the other side of the phone when you call to make an appointment. Sarita will assist you with appointments, hospital admission information and medical braces. She is available to answer any questions pre and post operatively. Sarita will do her best to assist you make your journey with us as easy as possible.
